The board announced the decision during a Thursday meeting. Under Georgia law, the appointment cannot become official until a 14-day public comment period has passed.
A graduate of Madison County High School, Williams earned a bachelor’s degree from Piedmont College, a master’s degree from Clemson University, and an education specialist degree in educational leadership from Lincoln Memorial University.
Williams has spent twenty years of his career serving Banks County Schools. He began as a physical education teacher and coach at Banks County Middle School before becoming athletic director at Banks County High School. He later served as assistant principal at the high school and principal of Banks County Elementary School before moving into district leadership as assistant superintendent for Madison County in 2014. Williams was named superintendent for the Madison County School System in 2018 and held that position for 6 years.
Board members cited Williams’ leadership experience, knowledge of instruction and school operations, and long-standing commitment to the Banks County community as factors in their decision.
Williams is expected to succeed Dr. Ann Hopkins, who will retire Oct. 1 after more than 30 years in education.
