Spotlight Teacher: Mr Andrew Hardy Banks County Middle School

Andrew Hardy is a 7th-grade social studies teacher who exemplifies the school's improvement goal of increasing student achievement. Hardy is in his 6th year of teaching with the last three at Banks County Middle.

Upon entering his classroom, students are immediately met with Hardy's enthusiasm and the belief that every student has the potential to learn and succeed.

According to Hardy, the best part of teaching is helping students discover uncharted territories. "My ultimate goal for my students is for them to leave my classroom with a better understanding of the world around them and to understand that what happens outside of the country affects them," states Hardy.

At the core of Hardy's teaching is the use of primary and secondary sources. "We focus on having students gather information from the text, make inferences, and build their own connections," Hardy explains. Hardy believes in a diverse approach to assessment. Frequent checks for understanding provide immediate feedback, while 'tickets out the door' serve as quick post-lesson assessments. He adds that these strategies help his students compare their current work to their past work, providing a valuable tool to assess growth.

Teaching 7th graders about Asia and Africa can sometimes be challenging to his students, especially with relevancy and making connections with their personal experiences. However, this very challenge fuels Hardy's dedication. "Having quality relationships with my students is the most effective way to get them invested and interested in the material."

Hardy's classroom reveals a structured yet flexible learning environment. A typical lesson starts with a bellwork question that either covers a previous lesson or foreshadows the day's lesson. Bellwork is followed by the day's learning intention and success criteria, followed by the beginning activity, which may be an Edpuzzle, notes, or an anticipation guide. The middle of the lesson will include discussion and partner work to promote student communication. The end of the lesson will contain a wrap-up activity, either a small writing assignment or a ticket out the door to assess student understanding.

When asked about his goal for his students, Hardy wants them "to leave my classroom with a better understanding of the world around them, realizing that global events have a ripple effect that touches their lives.".

"The best part of teaching is the opportunity to help students learn about another part of the world and watch them grow. I love teaching every day and seeing so many students excited about learning and willing to participate."

Banks County Middle School Principal Lisa Saxon states that Hardy is "renowned for his exceptional teaching at BCMS.  His engaging lessons captivate student's interest.  He effortlessly connects historical events to current affairs, fostering a deep understanding of the subject.  Mr. Hardy's dedication to his students and his ability to make complex topics accessible truly make him a standout educator".

At Banks County Middle School, Andrew Hardy is among the many educators who inspire and nurture a passion for learning. His balanced approach of rigor and compassion equips students with the academic foundation and confidence to thrive in middle school and their upcoming high school journey.
